Science Centre Upgrade

The Mechanical Movements team were recently in Oxfordshire upgrading the air conditioning equipment at the Culham Science Centre, in Abingdon.

Over two days, we removed 4no redundant chillers from the science facility and replaced them with 4no new Daikin air-cooled chillers. We also lifted into its final position in the chiller enclosure, an 8m header pipe system to connect the chillers.

For the lift we used a 60tonne mobile crane with strops, shackles and a spreader, lifting the equipment to and from a flatbed lorry. We positioned the new chillers onto bases within the chiller enclosure and removed the redundant equipment from the grounds.

These improvements were completed within the occupied research institute with just a small, temporary road closure on campus, causing minimal disruption to the live site.
