Student Accommodation Plant Installation in Central London…
Last week, the team at Mechanical Movements began working in Canary Wharf opposite the infamous Billingsgate Fish Market. They have been on site installing various plant consisting of 6-tonne transformers, 5-tonne generators, 8-tonne plate heat exchangers, 3-tonne booster pump sets, 4-tonne sprinkler pump sets, and several control panels.
This development is set to be the largest student accommodation in Europe, with three towers of 28, 36, and 46 storeys, providing 1,672 student beds and 80 residential apartments.
The plant and equipment were delivered to the site and then lifted using the on-site tower cranes. They were placed onto a temporary works platform, which allowed the team to move each piece of equipment to the ground floor. Once on the ground floor, a twin lifting frame was set up to assist with the manoeuvring of the equipment. They started by lifting and removing a 5-tonne concrete slab, opening the soft spot to access the lower basement level. Each piece of equipment was then lowered into the basement and manoeuvred into its designated plant room.
All the plant is expected to be placed in their final positions in the upcoming weeks. Once the build is completed, the Mechanical Movements team will then return to install the remaining plant, such as chillers and AHUs. The team has done an excellent job so far ensuring all various plant has been installed correctly whilst following all necessary health and safety precautions.
